Tinubu Signs Bill Overhauling Police Training Into Law.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially signed into law the Nigeria Police Training Institutions (Establishment) Bill, a landmark piece of legislation aimed at fundamentally reforming and professionalizing the nation's police force. The act, a key component of the administration's Renewed Hope Agenda, grants full legal status to police training across the country, creating a new framework for law enforcement education and development.

The newly enacted law is designed to modernize the Nigeria Police Force by embedding global best practices into its core training programs. For the first time, officers will receive specialized, institutionalized training in critical modern security fields, including intelligence gathering, cybersecurity, forensic science, and the protection of human rights.

This comprehensive overhaul establishes five tiers of training centers: Police Colleges, Police Training Schools, Police Tactical Schools, Police Technical Training Schools, and other specialized institutions. The legislation also empowers tactical schools focused on elite operational training for units such as the Mobile Police and Counter-Terrorism forces.

Senator Ahmed Abdulhamid Malam-Madori, the bill's sponsor, described the presidential assent as a "transformative milestone in Nigeria's internal security architecture." Security analysts concur, viewing the move as one of the most significant policing reforms in the nation's history.

The law aims to shift Nigerian policing from outdated practices to a technology-driven, disciplined, and community-oriented service. By institutionalizing merit-based promotions, advanced leadership courses, and citizen-focused modules, the reform directly targets the trust deficit between law enforcement and the public, heralding a new era of professional and accountable policing.
