Landmark Decision Sees Ondo State Hand Over UNIMEDTH Akure Complex to Power FUTA's New College of Medicine
AKURE, ONDO STATE – In a landmark decision for healthcare and education in Nigeria, the Ondo State Government has officially approved the transfer of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) complex in Akure to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). The move, ratified by the State Executive Council, paves the way for the facility to become the new Federal Teaching Hospital for FUTA's recently established College of Medicine.
The agreement marks a significant policy shift, transferring the state-run hospital, including all its buildings, advanced medical equipment, and existing staff, to federal control. The comprehensive handover ensures that all current employees of the hospital complex will be seamlessly absorbed into the new federal system without interruption to their service.
This decisive action comes after years of anticipation and various legislative efforts to establish a teaching hospital for FUTA, which received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence its Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) programme in 2021. The lack of a dedicated teaching hospital had been a critical hurdle for the university's medical students, who are approaching their clinical training years.
The development was finalized following a visionary approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who directed the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to expedite the establishment of the teaching hospital. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration has been praised for its instrumental role in facilitating the smooth transfer, a move that resolves what many saw as years of "lethargic uncertainty" under previous administrations.
In a statement, the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, confirmed the council's decision, highlighting that the transfer includes all assets and liabilities. This strategic collaboration is expected to significantly enhance the capacity for training medical professionals, improve healthcare delivery in Ondo State, and create more opportunities for specialized medical research.
The establishment of the FUTA Teaching Hospital is seen as a major win for the region, promising to transform Akure into a hub for medical excellence. It is anticipated that the full transition will bolster FUTA's ambition to become a leading institution for medical sciences in the country, providing a brighter future for both healthcare practitioners and patients in Nigeria.
