The Death Of Ken Saro Wiwa, And The Honour.

History: Why Ken Saro Wiwa Was Killed, Who And The Honor.

Ken Saro-Wiwa, a Nigerian writer and environmental activist, was executed by the Nigerian military dictatorship led by General Sani Abacha in 1995. He was convicted of the murder of four Ogoni chiefs, but his execution was widely seen as a political act to silence him and crush his movement for the Ogoni people's rights, particularly regarding the environmental damage caused by oil exploration.

Ken Saro-Wiwa was a prominent voice in the fight against oil pollution and environmental devastation in the Ogoni region of Nigeria, where Shell and other oil companies were operating. Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP). He co-founded MOSOP, which advocated for the rights of the Ogoni people, including environmental protection and compensation for the harm caused by oil exploitation.

Saro-Wiwa was accused of orchestrating the murder of four Ogoni chiefs at a meeting with the government.

Despite strong evidence suggesting he was innocent and despite international outcry, Saro-Wiwa was tried by a special military tribunal and found guilty.

He and eight others were hanged on November 10, 1995, after the executions were filmed and viewed as an act of brutality by the military.

Saro-Wiwa's execution sparked international condemnation and led to Nigeria being suspended from the Commonwealth for more than three years. He is now seen as a martyr for environmental and human rights.

His case exposed the flaws and lack of integrity in Nigeria's justice system, as well as the abuses of power under the military dictatorship.

Today he is being honoured by the President Bola Tinubu's led federal government of Nigeria.
